Is a Dress Actually Viable for Hiking? A Model's Honest Take on Montbell's Sun-Protection Outfit

"A dress is a non-starter in the mountains." If that's your position, this post is for you. Having actually worn one, I found a dress is a surprisingly sensible choice for easy hiking. The whole outfit is settled in one garment, changing is simple, and it covers you from the sun. Here I'll talk honestly about a sun-protection outfit built around the WIC. Dress (¥5,600) from Montbell, the Japanese outdoor brand — why it works, and where it doesn't.

One garment settles the whole outfit: the WIC. Dress

The star here is a single dress in Wickron, Montbell's quick-drying fabric. Let me say up front that there are days it suits and days it doesn't. Low-mountain hiking, walking a trail, an unhurried day out — yes. Rocky sections, chained scrambles, long ridge traverses — no. Get that distinction right and you'll be fine.

Its great strength is that the outfit is done in one garment, and that's what I like most. The six shared pieces (hat, neck, leg coverage and so on) stay exactly as they are, and the only thing added today is the dress. Changing is easy, and you can build the outfit without adding much to your load.

What's good about Wickron

Wickron is Montbell's own sweat-wicking, quick-drying fabric. It dries fast when you sweat in it and holds odour poorly, which makes it comfortable outdoors or after exercise. It's relatively soft against the skin too, so long days in it don't get unpleasant.

• Hand-washable, and dry almost as soon as it's hung: easy to wash while travelling or camping, and ready again by morning.
• An A-line silhouette with room around the legs: it doesn't restrict you when you move, and I didn't feel constricted even wearing a waist belt.
• It doesn't ride up under a pack: because it widens towards the hem, the silhouette holds even when the back is pulled up, and the fabric resists abrasion so it doesn't pill easily.

The foundation of this look is the six shared pieces from the previous post on sun-protection gear: three starters covering head, neck and legs, plus three more for arms, hands and throat. You combine as many of them with the dress as the day calls for.

The usual questions: walking, and wind lifting the hem

People often ask whether a dress makes walking awkward. On a gentle trail or a plateau walk, there's enough room around the legs that it barely registers. But anything where you're taking big steps up rock does restrict you, so those routes aren't the place for it.

As for wind lifting the hem, the leg covers are what make this work — even if it lifts, you aren't exposed. The leg covers are part of the three starter pieces, so if you already own them you're set. Shorts or leggings underneath add another layer of reassurance. That said, it isn't foolproof, so on routes with a long ridge section, shorts plus leg covers is the safer combination.

Where this outfit really works

The WIC. Dress sun-protection outfit is at its best on:

• Low-mountain hikes, plateau walks, and days you want to take slowly
• Time around a mountain hut or campsite, and days with travel built in
• Days you want less faff with changing and your sun protection handled in one go

A dress in the mountains is a perfectly reasonable choice as long as you pick the day. It isn't for routes with sustained rock and chains — but on a well-maintained low mountain, it's a genuinely pleasant way to have both ease and sun protection at once.
